The University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Taxila stands in a historically rich region, renowned globally for its archaeological sites. The ancient name “Takshasila” translates to the city of cut stones. Once part of the powerful Achaemenian Empire, Alexander conquered Taxila in 327 BC.
Later, the Mauryan dynasty took control, and under the rule of the great Ashoka, the city reached an advanced stage of development. Subsequently, the Indo-Greek successors of Alexander’s warriors ruled the region, ushering in the most prosperous era of Gandhara.
Around 50 AD, the Kushan dynasty emerged, transforming Taxila into a major center for learning, philosophy, art, and religion over the next two centuries. During this time, Jaulian became a prestigious academic hub, attracting pilgrims and scholars from as far as China and Greece.
Taxila’s historical significance took a new turn around 1950 when authorities established Ordnance Factories in Wah, near the city. In the mid-1960s, the country’s largest Mechanical Complex and Foundry were set up in Taxila, further boosting industrial development.
By the early 1970s, the city witnessed a new phase of growth with the establishment of Heavy Industries Taxila near its renowned museum. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s largest Aeronautical Complex emerged in Kamra, about 45 km from Taxila.
Recognizing Taxila’s ideal location, the Punjab government selected it as the site for a constituent college of the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, in the mid-1970s. Industrial expansion accelerated in the region, with neighboring industrial organizations rapidly growing.
Additionally, a new industrial zone developed in Hattar, approximately 20 km from Taxila. As a result, Taxila is evolving into a national industrial hub while serving as a gateway to the historic Silk Route.
The Establishment of UET Taxila
In response to the rising number of students during the 1970s, authorities initiated a plan to expand the University of Engineering and Technology Lahore by establishing additional campuses. As part of this initiative, they founded the University College of Engineering Taxila in 1975. Initially, the college operated in Sahiwal for three years before relocating to its permanent campus in Taxila in 1978.
For nearly 15 years, the University of Engineering and Technology Lahore administratively controlled the college. However, in October 1993, the institution gained independence through the University of Engineering and Technology Taxila Ordinance of 1993, becoming a fully chartered university. Today, UET Taxila enrolls over 2,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students, continuing its legacy as a leading institution in engineering and technology.
UET Location
The university campus is located on the outskirts of Taxila, approximately 5 km from the city center. It is situated near the Mohra Shah Wali Shah railway station on the Taxila-Havelian branch line. Taxila itself lies 35 km from the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, along the main Rawalpindi-Peshawar highway.
University buses operate daily routes between the campus and the cities of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Wah Cantt. The campus spans 163 acres and includes all the teaching departments, a residential colony for faculty and staff, student hostels, a guesthouse, a post office, and a bank.
UET Taxila Library :
The Central Library of the University actively disseminates knowledge and supports teaching, research, and extension services. It accommodates around 400 readers in various halls, creating a comfortable study environment. Open in two shifts from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM on all working days, the library also includes scheduled breaks.
The library holds a vast collection of encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, standard specifications, yearbooks, almanacs, abstracts, and indexes. It also offers an extensive reference collection of textbooks and general technical books.
Stocks and Services
The library houses 63,501 volumes of books and various issues of scientific and technical serials across multiple fields. In addition to engineering subjects, it offers a substantial collection on humanities, social sciences, and Islamic Studies. Members can borrow books and other materials, except for serials, reference books, or reserved books, for specified periods.
